A press conference was held this morning by Marco Impagliazzo, President of Sant’Egidio, on the proposals for legal immigration to the Italian Government and the European Union. The audience included many journalists as well as many families who arrived via the humanitarian corridors, now universally recognised as a best practice.
Mr. Impagliazzo initially focused on the safe and legal arrivals arranged by the Humanitarian Corridors, which have made it possible for people in a state of vulnerability and families in difficulty to arrive from Syria and the Horn of Africa.
He then listed proposals for migration management, including the strengthening of rescue at sea at European level, of the resettlement process at EU level and of language teaching and job placement for those who arrive in Italy even through irregular channels, to prevent them from falling prey to crime. In Sant’Egidio’s vision, widespread reception is the key to effective integration of immigrants, also solving a number of socio-economic problems afflicting Italy and Europe.
