97 refugees arrive in Rome via the Humanitarian Corridors

A flight from Addis Ababa has landed at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino airport with 97 Eritrean and Somali refugees. This remarkable event marks another milestone in the operation of the Humanitarian Corridors, a joint initiative promoted by the Community of Sant’Egidio and the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), with the essential collaboration of the Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs. The president of the Community of Sant’Egidio, Marco Impagliazzo, together with the ambassador Pierfrancesco Sacco and the vice-prefect Carla Di Quattro, gave them a warm welcome. Impagliazzo’s words carried a message of peace and hope: “Welcome to a peaceful country, where you will start a new life. From now on, peace will be your home”.

This event was also the best occasion to discuss the contribution of HUMCORE Project to the development of the Humanitarian Corridors practice, thank to the simultaneous presence of members of institutions, private sponsors, cultural mediators, volunteers and final beneficiaries. The effectiveness of the Corridors, the strenghts of the model and the contribution of the Project clearly emerged from this meaningful event. The peculiarity of the Project relies on the cohabitation of very operative objectives, such as the arrival and integration of many new beneficiaries, and very deep and accurate research contributions, aimed at producing new instruments and strategies for the further improvement and diffusion of the practice.
