Seventy-one Syrian refugees arrived in Italy and Belgium from Lebanon in recent days . This achievement was made possible by the Humanitarian Corridor model, which has so far permitted to welcome and integrate more than 6,000 refugees in Europe.
The new-arrived families will be welcomed in different regions of Belgium and Italy (Lazio, Calabria, Friuli, Lombardy, Piedmont, Apulia), according to the practice of “widespread reception” that has helped to effectively integrate the refugees in the social tissue. As soon as they land, the beneficiaries of the Humanitarian Corridors project are welcomed in local communities, where children immediately begin a schooling course, while adults attend a local language course and, once they have obtained refugee status, are introduced into the labour market.
The model, which is entirely self-financed and easily replicable, is based on a strong interconnection between pre-departure and post-arrival activities; the arrival in Europe is only one step of a process of full inclusion, during which the beneficiaries are continuously supported by the project’s sponsoring partners.
