New arrivals in Belgium and France

"The Humanitarian Corridors are a path of solidarity and responsibility" - said Valerie Regnier, head of Sant'Egidio France

The humanitarian corridors do not stop during the summer and continue to allow many families to start a new life in Europe. Within two days in June, two flights from Lebanon brought 26 Syrian refugees to Belgium and 13 to France. This was also possible thanks to national authorities and numerous organisations in the two countries: the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Interior, the Belgian Federal Government, Semaines sociales de France and OFII.

These agreements were complemented by those with the Christian churches and Catholic dioceses of the two countries, which allowed for a “widespread reception” and integration, thanks to the solidarity network created by Sant’Egidio. This network has so far welcomed more than 200 Syrian refugees in Belgium and more than 500 refugees in France, providing accommodation in 45 French districts. As Valerie Regnier, head of Sant’Egidio France, recalled, “the humanitarian corridors are a path: a path of solidarity and responsibility“.
