New arrivals in Italy and Belgium through Humanitarian Corridors implemented by the Community of Sant’Egidio. 10 asylum-seekers arrived at Fiumicino Airport from Nicosia, after spending several months in refugees camps in Cyprus, the European country that hosts more migrants in proportion to population. The arrival follows the visit of Pope Francis to Ciprus in December 2021. The migrants will be hosted in Rome by the Community of Sant’Egidio.
At the same time, a new Humanitarian Corridor begins operating in Belgium. It will allow the legal and safe entrance of 250 people. 16 Syrian citizens, 6 of whom were minors, have already arrived at Bruxelles airport; they were refugees in Lebanon for years.
In all, about 5200 refugees arrived in Europe through Humanitarian Corridors, by virtue of a widespread network of reception. 4450 of them arrived in Italy; in addition, 1800 Ukrainian citizens have been welcomed by the Community of Sant’Egidio in many European countries. All this was made possibile thanks to self-funding projects and to the generosity of associations, religious communities, parishes and common citizens who voluntarily put at disposal their homes and efforts.
