On 27-28 October 2022, about 100 migrants arrived in Italy and France from Beirut, through the Humanitarian Corridors. They are Syrians who have escaped from war and have long lived in Lebanon as refugees . About 30% of them are minors, who can now restart a new life together with their families. A few days earlier, other migrants had arrived in Belgium and, again, in Italy.
More than 800 arrivals – out of about 5200 since 2016- took place only in 2022. This figure does not include thousands of Ukrainians welcomed and helped by the Community of Sant’Egidio and its partners after the outbreak of war in February.
The Humanitarian Corridors Scheme continues to produce excellent results also at a time when the attention of the world, and important resources of the Community as well, are devoted to the Ukrainina emergency. This means that the Scheme is proving successful over the years, helping people who risk to be “forgotten” as a result of new crisis and conflicts.
The adoption of the Humanitarian Corridors model throughout Europe would make it possible the safe and legal entry into Europe of thousands of people, who are fully entitled to humanitarian protection according the international and European rules.
